Welcome in.

Never say a cupcake can’t change your life. After all, it was a pumpkin cupcake that led Jen (in a meandering way) to Bow, Washington, and what has become House Kinlands.

Granted, it was an exceptional cupcake. Delicious enough to inspire a half-hour pilgrimage from the farmer’s market in Bellingham (where the pumpkin cupcakes were first tasted) to the tiny town of Edison, where there are charming restaurants, saloons, boutiques, ocean views, and, most importantly, more cupcakes via Breadfarm’s brick and mortar bakery.

To get to Edison, one must traverse the nearby valley of Bow. And when the view of that wild, magical valley first opened before Jen, she knew the cupcake was simply a means to draw her here. This place had been calling.

Bow is a place unlike any other. There’s a ley line where the Earth whispers secrets to anyone willing to listen. The ferns flourish. Coyotes, bears, foxes, cougars, swans, ducks, eagles, and snow geese converge. In the bay, whales sing their sacred songs as they glide through the choppy Pacific waters.

Settlers cleared the ancient forests for farming, but the land hasn’t forgotten the majestic presence of trees. The air carries a memory of branches in the wind. The animals gather and thrive — you might see a hummingbird perched next to an eagle. The people who live here hold a touch of wilderness in their hearts.
Over time, an energy grew between this spirited place and another, one with its own ancient stories, in Utah. The two have inspired, informed, and sustained one another.

Now we think of House Kinlands as a sister to The Kinlands in Riverton, Utah.

At The Kinlands we grow produce for our community in a way that’s led by the land. We offer seasonal workshops and gatherings, opportunities to connect with animals and the land, and a selection of primitive-yet-elegant home goods (many of which you’ll live alongside during your home stay).

At House Kinlands we offer home stays – a time and space to root into wood, water, stone, and yourself. When the stay is over, find the same thoughtfully handmade and natural products you’ve fallen for at The Kinlands online.

At House Kinlands and The Kinlands alike, ecology, economy, and spirit are woven together in all we do. We resonate deeply with the words of Robin Wall Kimmerer in Braiding Sweetgrass:

In weaving well-being for land and people, we need to pay attention to the lessons of the three rows. Ecological well-being and the laws of nature are always the first row. Without them, there is no basket of plenty. Only if that first circle is in place can we weave the second. The second reveals material welfare, the subsistence of human needs. Economy built upon ecology. But with only two rows in place, the basket is still in jeopardy of pulling apart. It’s only when the third row comes that the first two can hold together. Here is where ecology, economics, and spirit are woven together. By using materials as if they were a gift, and returning that gift through worthy use, we find balance. I think that third row goes by many names: Respect. Reciprocity. All Our Relations. I think of it as the spirit row.

To us, this means integrity of ingredients, process, and packaging. Here, you’ll find materials of wood, fur, leather, stoneware, linen, cotton, hemp, flax, wool. Each purchase supports you and the person whose hands made it, while showing respect and reciprocity to the Earth.

Our long-term vision is to restore the land around House Kinlands to the Land’s Dream, guided by the Earth itself. As we see that now, a return to the forests, lush with wild diversity: birch, sycamore, maple, firs, and a rich undergrowth of ferns and mosses.

So, coming full circle, yes. A cupcake can indeed change your life. As could a carefully-crafted cup of coffee or an herb-infused ritual bath. The question is: Are you willing to follow the thread of adventure unwinding before you?

Meet the House Kinlands Stewards.
